Born in Faizabad now Ayodhya in 1802, Mir Babar Ali was surrounded by poetry from a very young age. Being born into a family of poets, his father, Mir Mustahsan Khaleeq, and grandfather, Mir Hasan, were also accomplished poets. It was not surprising that Mir Babar Ali would follow in their footsteps, and he started composing poetry from a young age.

Mir Babar Ali was an avid reader and admirer of the Greek epics of Homer and Virgil, and also the Indian epic, The Ramayana, composed by Valmiki. His love for these epics is reflected in his poetry, where he often referenced them or drew inspiration from them.

However, it was his contribution to the Indian form of Elegy, known as “marsia”, that brought Mir Babar Ali the most recognition. In this form of poetry, the poet mourns the death of a martyr or a religious leader, and Mir Babar Ali was considered a master of this art form. His marsias were filled with emotion and vivid imagery, which made them immensely popular among the people.

Apart from being a poet, Mir Babar Ali was also a teacher and had a great interest in education. He opened a school in Faizabad, where he taught Urdu, Persian, and Arabic to the students.
