Bahu Begum Maqbara is the tomb of Begum Unmatuz Zohra Bano, the queen of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula. The mausoleum of Bahu Begum is very famous for its architecture and the way it is designed and constructed. It is built by the chief of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula, Darab Ali Khan.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected the site and is managed by the Shia Board Committee (Lucknow). With the coming of Muharram, this site also comes to life.

In Avadh, it is said to be the finest building of its kind. The city looks mesmerising from the top of the complex which is said to be the tallest standing edifice in Ayodhya.

Nawab Suja-ud-Daula commissioned the maqbara or mausoleum in the memory of his loving wife Bahu Begum. Most of the attributed buildings are associated with her as she was a woman of great nobility and high rank. Her skills in politics and administration could be seen after the demise of her husband. After the sudden death of Nawab Shuja- ud- Daula, she continued to rule the state to protect the succession for her son Asaf-ud-Daula as a ‘Nawab’. The maqbara is an excellent example of Mughal architecture. History has it that the tomb was constructed in the year in 1816 with an attempt to recreate the grandeur of the Taj Mahal and so it is considered as ‘The Taj Mahal of East.’ The white marble guards its lustre and when seen in the moonlight, seems to give the tomb a shine of immortality.

It is located at Murawantola, Ram Nagar in Faizabad.

It is 8.6km from Ayodhya Railway Station and 1.8km from Faizabad Junction.

The visiting hours are 7am to 4pm.
