The temple is located at Ram ki Paidi in Ayodhya. Kush, the younger son of Rama established the temple of Nageshwarnath. Nageshwarnath means The Lord of all Snakes i.e. Lord Shiva. History says that Kush lost his armlet while bathing in the Saryu, which was picked up by a Nag-Kanya, who fell in love with him. As she was a devotee of Shiva, Kush erected this temple for her.
It is believed that this has been the only temple to have survived the bad conditions until the time of Vikramaditya, the rest of the city had fallen into ruins and was covered by dense forests. Vikramaditya was able to locate Ayodhya and the sites of different shrines with the help of this temple. The minister of Safdar Jung, named Naval Rai built the present temple in 1750.

Shivratri being a very significant festival is celebrated here in a big way, and Shiv Barat procession is taken out during these celebrations.Thousands of devotees visit the temple during the festive time of Mahashivratri to seek the blessings of God.

The temple is 2.8km away from Ayodhya Railway Station and 10.6km away from Faizabad Junction.
